Visit to Belzec extermination camp memorial

Belzec Extermination Camp

Pronounced Bell-zjitz was one of the key centres for the extermination of European Jewry and the
first of several camps camp with the mission of carrying out Operation Reinhard -- the German call to exterminate Jews. Belzec extermination camp began operating on March 17, 1942. The number of victims of the camp is unclear, but is likely to be significantly higher than 500,000.

Arriving in an unassuming collection of houses and small factory buildings of Belzec, I passed the railway station and pulled into a car park. Beyond the car park I could see the entrance to the Belzec memorial.

To get to the memorial car park I had to cross several railway tracks:

I passed through the green gates and started my tour of the camp. There is a white wall bordering the leading edge of the memorial with a gap in the middle.
